I've never felt this much behind as a programmer. The profession is being dramatically refactored as the bits contributed by the programmer are increasingly sparse and between. I have a sense that I could be 10X more powerful if I just properly string together what has become available over the last ~year and a failure to claim the boost feels decidedly like skill issue. There's a new programmable layer of abstraction to master (in addition to the usual layers below) involving agents, subagents, their prompts, contexts, memory, modes, permissions, tools, plugins, skills, hooks, MCP, LSP, slash commands, workflows, IDE integrations, and a need to build an all-encompassing mental model for strengths and pitfalls of fundamentally stochastic, fallible, unintelligible and changing entities suddenly intermingled with what used to be good old fashioned engineering. Clearly some powerful alien tool was handed around except it comes with no manual and everyone has to figure out how to hold it and operate it, while the resulting magnitude 9 earthquake is rocking the profession. Roll up your sleeves to not fall behind.
LOCAL-FIRST AI / ECOSYSTEM PROTOCOL
Hapa Node Atlas
Hapa is a local-first AI operating system for turning agents, cards, media, memory, and worldbuilding workflows into inspectable nodes. Each node has a role in the protocol: capture provenance, route context, coordinate handoffs, and make the new programmable layer visible.
PROBLEM / NEW PROGRAMMABLE LAYER
The Manual Is Missing
AI has made the individual developer stronger, but the work now lives inside a shifting layer of agents, prompts, memory, permissions, tools, plugins, workflows, and context. Hapa turns that layer into a visible operating system.
HAPA RESPONSE
Make The New Layer Inspectable
Hapa treats agents, tools, contexts, prompts, repos, skills, media, and workflows as named nodes with memory, provenance, routes, and operating state. The point is not to hide the complexity. The point is to make it navigable.
Map The Sprawl
Node Atlas and .hapaDash turn disconnected repos, local apps, protocols, and live services into a visible graph with links, status, and flow animation.
Keep The Context
Second Brain stores source material, turns, wiki pages, cards, topics, and agent context so the system can remember why work exists.
Prove The Capability
Character sheets and proof maps convert messy work history into skills, evidence, timelines, and operator-ready dossiers.
Operate The Workflow
Protocol flows, dashboards, and repo linkbacks give the new abstraction layer handles: where it starts, where it routes, what it touches, and what changed.
